Middlemen are trying to shorten the duration of supply contracts to 90 days from one year so they can pass on higher costs more quickly. And food brands are shrinking the contents of their packages, from ice-cream cartons to beverage containers."

RealClearMarkets - Articles - The Wisdom of Crowds, Year Two: "The Wisdom of Crowds, Year Two
By John Tamny

Not satisfied with traditional measures of stock valuation, University of Chicago business-school graduates Rafael Resendes and Daniel Obrycki founded the Applied Finance Group (AFG – note that the author of this piece serves as an economic advisor to AFG’s mutual fund arm, Toreador Research & Trading) in 1995. Resendes and Obrycki created models showing among other things why earnings do not reflect a company's profits, why P/E ratios are poor proxies for company value, and why sales growth is not a leading indicator when it comes to rising stock prices.
Their research led them to what they call an Economic Margin Framework, which corrects the various distortions and flaws that reveal themselves with traditional 'As Reported' accounting figures. Incorporating the widely accepted economic principle that competition gradually erodes excess returns over time, Resendes and Obrycki built a market-outperforming valuation metric that has attracted over 175 institutional clients managing over $350 billion in U.S. equities alone from around the world."

10 Wild Predictions for 2009 - Capital Commerce (usnews.com): "10 Wild Predictions for 2009
August 07, 2008 03:37 PM ET James Pethokoukis Permanent Link

My pal John 'the Brain' Tamny over at RealClearMarkets writes a fascinating post on an investment firm that does a 'wisdom of crowds' thing with its clients in order to make market forecasts. Here are some of their 2009 predictions, as paraphrased a bit by me:

1) 68 percent think Obama will win.
2) 53 percent think Obamanomics will be bad for the economy.
3) Asked to predict what will be the economy's biggest problem next year: oil/energy (15.5 percent) and inflation (21 percent) got the most votes, while the credit crisis (9.5 percent), Democrats (9.5 percent), and housing (14 percent) rounded out the top five.
4) 30 percent think the S&P 500 will outperform the Russell 2000 by more than 5 percent this year, while another 46 percent believe the S&P will beat the Russell by less than 500 basis points.
5) 67 percent think we'll see $100 oil before it reaches $170/barrel.
6) 55 percent of those surveyed still believe the economy will enter a recession this year.
7) 92 percent feel the dollar will appreciate against the euro this year.
8) 83 percent think a stronger dollar will help the economy over the next five years.
9) 82 percent think John McCain would be good for the economy.
10) 64 percent think equity prices will decrease if capital-gains taxes are increased in 2009.

The Stimulus That Didn't Stimulate - Capital Commerce (usnews.com)

The Stimulus That Didn't Stimulate - Capital Commerce (usnews.com): "The Stimulus That Didn't Stimulate
August 08, 2008 11:22 AM ET James Pethokoukis Permanent Link

An analysis done for the WSJ finds that Americans saved rather than spent their stimulus checks. This is exactly what I said would happen. Well, actually, this is exactly what I said Milton Friedman said would happen. This from December 2007:
Back in 1957, Milton Friedman proposed something called the 'permanent-income hypothesis,' which said that people spend money based on what they consider their normal level of income and what they expect to earn over the long term. Short-term fluctuations in income, whether for better or worse, are smoothed out by more debt or less spending if consumers perceive the fluctuation as temporary. People adjust slowly to changes in income—just as the economy adjusts slowly to changes in Federal Reserve interest rate policy—which makes it tough for the government to fine-tune the economy. Short-term moves simply don't have the oomph policymakers expect, especially when the slow movement of legislation puts them out of step with the actual business cycle.

The 2009 Economy - Capital Commerce (usnews.com): "The 2009 Economy
August 08, 2008 11:24 AM ET James Pethokoukis Permanent Link

Have a gander at this bit of economic analysis from Macroeconomic Advisers (bold is mine):

The economic outlook for the second half is weak, at best. We expect domestic final demand to shrink at nearly a 1% pace over the second half and GDP growth to be barely positive, on average, over that period. The weakness in growth will push the unemployment rate up to 6¼% by the first quarter of 2009...Despite the weakness over the second half, we continue to believe that a sustained recovery will emerge next year. In particular, we expect growth to rebound to a 3% pace in the second half of 2009 and to above 3% in 2010...The considerable slack that emerges and the flattening-out of the dollar and energy prices that we anticipate create a very benign environment for inflation, allowing headline and core PCE inflation to fall all the way to 1.5% by the end of the forecast horizon.... The combination of falling headline inflation and weak economic growth should be sufficient to keep the Federal Reserve from tightening policy this year. However, once growth appears to turn the corner, the Committee will be quick to begin raising rates. We continue to expect the first tightening to take place in March 2009 and project the federal funds rate to reach 3½% by the end of that year.
Me: The flaw in this analysis is that it completely ignores possible huge tax hikes and huge budget deficits. Both would be bad for growth."

The End of Credit Card Consumerism - US News and World Report: "The End of Credit Card Consumerism
A new frugality could remake the U.S. economy—and American life
By Kimberly Palmer
Posted August 8, 2008

When it comes to longevity, few royals can top America's King Consumer. For more than four decades, our shopaholic nation has shown an insatiable desire to spend until our credit cards melt. And throughout this era, consumer spending has, well, consumed a greater and greater share of our total economy. Only twice since 1965, despite half a dozen recessions, have Americans spent less in a year than the previous one. Indeed, it often seems that we have defined ourselves by our ability to buy supersized everything, from McMansions to tricked-out SUVs to 60-inch flat-screen televisions—all enabled by decades of cheap credit."

4-Ways-to-Earn-Cash-for-Recycling: Personal Finance News from Yahoo! Finance: "4 Ways to Earn Cash for Recycling
by Maura Judkis
Monday, August 4, 2008

Recycling may be getting easier each year, but let's face it: People are lazy. That's why bottles get thrown into trash bins when recycling bins are a foot away. It's also why technology ends up in landfills, when it could be deconstructed for its perfectly good parts. Four programs are trying to change that by offering armchair environmentalists cold, hard cash to recycle their stuff."

The Credit Crisis Turns One - Yahoo! News: "The Credit Crisis Turns One By Prashant Gopal

Happy birthday, credit crisis. It was a year ago August that the world began to suspect the economy was heading into something worse than a slump. The real concern is how much bigger it will get."
