The Louisiana study broadens the definition of cultural industries to include much more than just the nonprofit cultural institutions, but also:

self-employed artists — writers, performers, musicians, visual artists, and artisans;
art and cultural components of educational institutions;
businesses that produce goods and services involving the arts;
businesses that service the arts community;
traditional and new media;
and cuisine.

The report explores the issues that concern any economic sector:
workforce development, business development, research, finance, and markets.

Four industries are the focus of an in depth examination:
food and culinary arts, literary arts, music, and historic preservation industries.

The plan for nurturing Louisiana’s cultural economy provides specific strategies and actions that fall within four areas:
Supporting the origination and sustainability of authentic culture;
Enhancing the production capacity for cultural products;
Expanding the distribution and markets for cultural products; and
Fostering the support system of the cultural economy.
